Keeping kosher in college is easier than you think.

Whether you keep strictly kosher, keep kosher at home, or just want a good kosher meal with friends once in a while, your campus Chabad House is the place to start. Chabad Houses keep kosher kitchens, host kosher Shabbat and holiday meals, and in many cases run kosher meal plans or kosher cafes for students. Some Florida universities also offer kosher options through campus dining.

Types of kosher food you will find

  • Kosher meal plans. Some Chabad Houses and universities offer daily kosher meals or a few kosher meals a week. A handful of campuses in Florida offer a full kosher meal plan.
  • Kosher cafes and dining. Several Florida Chabad Houses run kosher cafes or partner with nearby kosher restaurants and food trucks, often with student discounts.
  • Packaged kosher food. Many campus markets carry certified kosher packaged meals and snacks, which help on busy days.
  • Shabbat and holiday meals. Every Chabad House serves kosher Shabbat dinners and holiday meals, which for many students covers the most important meals of the week.
  • Kosher for Passover. Passover is the hardest week to eat kosher on a campus meal plan, so many Chabad Houses offer Passover meals for the whole holiday.

Tips for keeping kosher in college

  • Contact the Chabad House before you arrive. They know which campus options are truly kosher and which only look it.
  • Ask about meal plan exemptions or kosher meal plan credits if you keep strictly kosher.
  • If you have a kitchen, the rabbi or rebbetzin can help you kasher it and put up a mezuzah.
  • Learn to recognize reliable kosher certification symbols, and ask when in doubt.
